Reflection 4

In compare and contrast essays, there are four paragraphs. The first one contains a brief introduction about which two things you will show the similarities and the differences.

The second paragraph contains the similarities which start with the first obvious similarity… another distinct similarity… yet another important similarity… between the two things and there should be 3 or 4 similarities at least.

The third paragraph is for the differences and there should be 3 or 4 sentences at least, the same as the similarities, the first obvious difference… another important difference... etc, but the difference is in the points.

At last in the conclusion, you will show your preference and the reasons for your choice. Also it’s not necessary to prefer one thing over the other one. You can show your preference in the two things and the reasons.

How olive oil is made

Most people in the world eat olives but they don’t know how olive oil is made. If you want to know how the olives are produced, you have to follow important steps to succeed. In this essay I will show you how the olive oil is manufactured.

Firstly, the olives are picked by hand or with sticks and they are collected in nets beneath the trees and this begins in early September and goes on till late December. Then, the leaves and stones are removed and the olives are washed to eliminate any remaining impurities before they are crushed. After that, the olives are crushed by using granite stones and this is done within 24-36 hours of picking. Next, the paste obtained is layered on mats and it is put under pressure from a screw or hydraulic press. The liquid is drained from the mats and is collected for separation. Finally, the liquid is separated by putting it through a centrifugal separator.

As you can see from what I have written above, it’s not easy to produce good quality olive oil and it takes time. But following the steps will lead you to succeed.

Brunei and the UAE

The UAE has a lot of friendly countries like Oman, Jordan, France and Brunei. In this essay I’m going to write about the similarities and the differences between the UAE and Brunei.

There are many important similarities between the UAE and Brunei. The first distinct similarity is that both are Islamic countries. Another obvious similarity is that both of them have a monarchy, the sheikh in the UAE and the sultan in Brunei. Yet another important similarity is that both countries have large stocks of oil and gas which raise the economy. A final significant similarity is that both of them have modern airports with the newest facilities and planes.

Although there are many similarities between the UAE and Brunei, also there are several important differences. The first obvious difference is that the design of cars is different in each country; for example in Brunei the cars are right-hand drive, compared to the cars in the UAE which are designed as left-hand drive. Another significant difference is that the weather in Brunei is rainy and very nice, while in the UAE the weather for most period of the year is hot. Yet another distinct difference is that Brunei uses a dollar currency, compared to the UAE which uses AED currency. A further important difference is that the style of houses is different. In Brunei the houses are built on pillars, while in the UAE the houses are built with concrete. A final obvious difference is that in Brunei the secondary schools are mixed, but in the UAE they separate the males and females in the secondary schools.

Overall, the differences outweigh the similarities. The lifestyle in Brunei is nice and the weather also. But I prefer living in the UAE because it’s my country and I can’t live anywhere else in the world except the UAE.

Reflection 3

The process essays are similar to the procedure essays in the size and in the introduction (25 words), body (75 words) and the conclusion ( 25 words). Also the linking words are the same (firstly, secondly, next etc...).

The difference between them is that in the process essays I used the passive voice ( was taken, was frozen etc…) which makes the process essays harder than procedure essays.

As I said in the beginning the rest of the process essays (size, linking words) are the same as the procedure essays.

Abu Dhabi & Baniyas

The UAE consists of seven emirates, Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Sharjah, Ajman, Um Al Quwain, RAK, Al Fujairah and the capital is the city of Abu Dhabi. Abu Dhabi has many suburbs like Al Shahamah and Baniyas. In this essay, I would like to write about the similarities and the differences between Abu Dhabi and Baniyas.

There are many important similarities between Abu Dhabi and Baniyas. The first distinct similarity is that both are in the UAE. Another obvious similarity is that both of them share the same government and take the same orders. Yet another important similarity is that they have the same system of healthcare and education. A final significant similarity is that they are in the emirate of Abu Dhabi which is the capital of the UAE.

Although there are many similarities between Abu Dhabi and Baniyas, also there are several important differences. The first obvious difference is that Abu Dhabi has more high-rise buildings than Baniyas which has a lot of small houses. Another significant difference is that Abu Dhabi is the capital city and has more people than Baniyas. Yet another distinct difference is that in Abu Dhabi there is more noise and traffic than Baniyas which is very quiet. A further important difference is that Abu Dhabi has malls, cinemas and sea which are not available in Baniyas. A final obvious difference is that in Abu Dhabi there are a lot of traffic lights compared to Baniyas, which hasn’t any at all.

Overall, the differences outweigh the similarities. Although there are no malls and palces for entertainment in Baniyas, I prefer living in it because it’s very quiet and there is no noise and traffic jam and this is the most important.

Reflection 1

I found procedure essays easy because they are mechanical. Introduction, main paragraph, conclusion: 25+100+25= 150 words. Use the imperative like: do this, do that, don't do this/that. Avoid the -ing form as in the flow charts. No imagination or creativity is needed.

Reflection 2

I found narrative story more difficult than procedure essay because you have to use your imagination to be able to write it. There are 3 tenses used in a narrative essay which are:
Simple past (they went, I said, he pointed..etc) and past perfect (he had taken, he had written...etc) and past continuous (I was going, he was thinking, they were talking... etc). You have to concentrate on the tenses, when you use them and where. Also the actions should be a series of events to get the reader excited when he reads the story.

Bad Day

Last year my friends and I went to the Marina Mall and it was the weekend in the evening. We decided to have a dinner first then go to the cinema. When we got to the Burger King to order one of my friends sat at the table and he told us that he will wait for us at the table.

When we returned to the table we found that our friend was arguing and shouting with another man. We headed to our friend and we asked him what happened. He told us that the man reserved the table before we came and he just went to the toilet for a few minutes. We couldn’t find another table because the patio was full and the man was insistent. We tried to explain to him that no table was empty but he refused to hear us. My other friends started to get angry because the man didn’t respect us and they started shouting. The man called the security of the mall and the party just started. The security man came and asked about this argument. The man lied to him and told him that we forced him to empty the table for him and we said to him bad words. The security man asked us to solve the problem without shouting or he would call the police. The man kept his voice loud and the security called the police after he warned us three times. The policeman came and asked what happened; the man lied to the police as he lied to the security before. The policeman didn’t hear what we said and he just heard what the man said. The police man sought to continue the scenario in the police station. In the police station the officer told the man to talk first. The man told more lies than before and when we wanted to explain, the officer requested us to be silent. After the man finished the officer took my friend to the temporary jail without giving a chance for my friend to talk. We tried to tell the officer but he just ignored us till we thought that the officer and the man knew each other. One of my friend's brother's was working in the police. My friend called him and he came. We were lucky that he knows the officer and he talked with him. The officer released my friend and we found the man outside the station laughing at us.

At last, everybody went home and we didn’t continue our evening because of the man. My friends hated that evening and really it was an awful day that I will never forget.

A Plane Story

I still remember that terrible event which happened three years ago. On that day at 5 pm I was stuck in a huge traffic jam on the main Abu Dhabi – Dubai road. I was really bored so I was looking around at everything.

As I was staring at the sky, I saw a plane coming out of the thick clouds and it was getting closer to the ground. After a few seconds all the people on the street saw what was happening, so I and a few other drivers got out of our cars and started to shout at everyone to clear their cars from the highway. Most of them rushed away from the road and screamed. In all this mess I looked up and noticed that something was wrong with one of the plane’s engines and it was on fire. In approximately five minutes several ambulances, policemen and fire brigades were on the scene preparing for the inevitable. The plane was a few seconds away from crashing on to the main road. The pilot activated the landing gear, but the plane was travelling too fast, so the landing gear collapsed. When that happened the plane burst into flames. All I could see were clouds of black smoke and the sound of huge explosions. I was shocked staring at the flames, when someone from the police woke me up and I offered to help them rescuing the passengers. There I found that the plane doors had opened and the people started to come out from the plane. I started to take the passengers to the ambulances and I helped them as best as I could. After saving most of the passengers, the police abandoned the plane. A few minutes later, the plane disappeared in a burst of flames.

After the accident, the police investigated about the cause of the problem and they found that the accident had been caused by a little mouse that had got into the plane and cut the engine wires. I felt really sorry because 53 passengers had died but I was also happy that the remaining 200 passengers had lived. This awful event really taught me the value of human life.
